January 2013 RS meeting

Sisters,  We will not have our regular meeting the first week in January.  Instead, we are going to the temple when it opens.  Our RS Temple day is Thursday, January 17th.  If you would like to carpool, we will be leaving the church at 6 PM.  If you would like to meet us at the temple, we are planning on attending the 7 PM session.  You are free to do other ordinances also, if you like.

Come to the Temple with us and start 2013 on a Spiritual note.....

Paver Brick Characters for the Holidays

We made a cute and simple snowman in our Make 'n Take, but you can use your imagination to make other holiday characters from the paver bricks.  Here are a few suggestions and a sample pattern for one of the them.  Let your creativity flow and have fun!

The antlers, arms and tails can be cut from wood and painted or made from two pieces of felt with cardboard between them for stiffening and attached with a glue gun.  Hats, gloves and other accessories can be cut from felt..  The strung lettering can be hung on wire.  The halo can be made from wire, as well.

Sammy Snowman Instructions

Made from a paving brick, this cute snowman was a lot of fun to complete.  One of our samples had "Let it snow" written on the front opposite the heart and patch....  so cute!  Add a fabric scarf and your snowman is ready for the cold.

Materials needed:

          Paver brick

          Black sharpie pen

White craft paint or latex-based paint to cover brick

Craft paints in orange, red, yellow, & black – or desired colors (or sharpie                     pens in desired colors)

          Nail with large head

Brushes: foam to cover the brick, smaller brush for nose, heart, patch

2 – 2” pom poms in color of choice

          9” chenille craft wire

          Cloth strip 2” x 23” for scarf

          Glue gun

1.    Wash and thoroughly dry the paver brick.

2.   Paint the paver with acrylic craft paint or latex-based paint in the color of choice.  You may need to use 2 coats, depending on the desired coverage and it may be easier to paint the bottom first (Fig 1), let dry, then paint the rest.  (Fig 2)  Let the paver dry thoroughly – possibly as long as a day.

     Fig 2

3.   With the sharpie pen, draw the eye, nose outline, smile, and other facial features.  Also draw on the heart and “patch” on the body.  Use the blog photo as your model, if you need.

4.   Fill in the nose with orange paint, the heart with red paint, and the patch with yellow paint – or use the colors of your choice.  You may also use sharpie pens instead of paint.

5.   Dip the nail head in a small amount of black paint and make the buttons on the body.  Or you may use the black sharpie to draw them instead.

6.   Add the stitches to the patch and all details on the body of the snowman with the black sharpie.  Add the lettering “Let it snow”, and the squiggles around the outer edge, if desired.

7.   Using the glue gun, attached the chenille wire ends to each side of the paver to start the ear muffs.  Attach a pom pom to each end of the chenille to complete the ear muffs.

8.   Tie the fabric strip around the neck area to form the scarf.

Candy Bar Ghost

Another variation of the Candy Bar Snowman..... Both this ghost and the bat from a previous post are perfect for Halloween.

Materials needed:
60” – 1” wide crepe paper strip (cut 2” crepe paper rolls in half – length wise ~ this will make 2 candy bar snowmen – or cut sheet crepe paper in 1” strips)

          1 – 1.55 oz Hershey-type milk chocolate candy bar

Twist up glue stick, hot glue gun, tape

White paper to cover the candy bar wrapper, optional

          Wiggly eyes

          Black fine tip pen

Heavy black paper scraps, if desired

1.    Cover the candy bar with the white paper, if desired, to help disguise the color from the wrapper.

2.    With the white crepe paper strip, begin in back and wrap the candy bar around like a mummy.  Secure both ends with the glue stick.

3.   Measure approx. 1” from top of candy bar and glue wiggly eyes on the front.  (see photo above)
4.   Add the nose and mouth, if desired, with the black fine tip sharpie or make eyes and large open mouth with heavy black paper and glue in place.

Candy Bar Bat

This is a variation of the Candy Bar Snowman.

Materials needed:
          1 – 1.55 oz Hershey-type milk chocolate candy bar

Twist up glue stick, hot glue gun, tape

          Wiggly eyes

Black pellon – 7” x 7” (this is the wings, so it shouldn’t be too stiff)

1.    Cut out the bat wings from the pellon using the pattern below.

2.   Glue the pellon to the back of the candy bar using a hot glue gun or glue stick.

3.   Hot glue the wiggly eyes on the pellon above the candy bar (face area with ears)

4.   Fold one side of the pellon over the front of the candy bar then fold the other side over the front to complete the bat. Use a small piece of rolled tape to keep the bat wings closed, if desired.
