Need a Service Project now that the kids are in school?
My sister, in the Meadows 10th Ward, is a quilter. She makes quilts for cancer patients of all ages and has recently learned of another need for her blankets. She visited with a local hospital and was introduced to the maternity ward. The nurses on staff told her about mothers and fathers who have new little blessings in their lives but do not have a blanket to take them home in. Sometimes fathers remove their shirts so they can wrap up their newborn son or daughter for the first trip home. Brenda started making quilts to donate to this hospital for these families.
Last week, while at an activity at the YMCA, she heard about a knitting group that may be interested in making baby blankets to donate to the hospital. This got me to thinking. I can crochet baby blankets as well.
I talked with Sister Ostler and she told me that I could offer this service project to the sisters in our ward. If you are interested in making baby blankets (quilted, sewn, knitted or crocheted), please let me know. I went to JoAnn's and found a free pattern that makes a 35" x 35" baby blanket out of one skein of Pound of Love yarn (regularly $10 per skein, on sale until 9/8 for $7). This is the perfect size for a newborn.
If using fabric, one yard each for the front and back is all that is needed. These would need to be bound and tied securely so they can go through repeated washings. Patterns should not include anything religious, military, political or seasonal. Generic baby patterns or soft baby colors are best.
My sister is willing to deliver our baby blankets when she delivers her quilts. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to make a baby blanket to donate to these precious newborn babies and their families. You can call me at 478-6889.
